An impressive collection of photographs that vividly documents Salgado’s expeditions in the Brazilian part of the Amazionan forest, spanning seven years of trips.

The exhibition unfolds along two captivating naratives, portraying the vast and lush landscapes alongside the daily lives of the local indigenous population and their harmonious coexistance with nature. The use of black&white, with its strong contrasts, enhances the visual impact of these photographs and strikes the visitor, since traditionally the approach of nature photography preserves the original colours.

The whole display contributes to creating a truly immersive experience for the visitor. Some photos are suspended, hanging directly from the ceiling, while others are elegantly displayed on the walls. The extended space of La Fabbrica del Vapore has been thoughtfully segmented, creating alcoves to showcase shots focused on the local people and exhibiting the landscapes ones in the rest of the space, as if nature surrended these population but also the viewer.

To further enrich the visitor’s journey, an audio soundtrack featuring nature sounds, composed by Jean-Michel Jarre, permeates the space. This combination of visual and auditory elements transforms the exhibition into a multisensory exploration, inviting visitors to connect with Salgado’s profound narrative.

“My wish, with all my heart, with all my energy, with all the passion I possess, is that in 50 years’ time this exhibition will not resemble a record of a lost world. Amazon must live on – and, always at its heart, its indigenous inhabitants.”

– S. Salgado
