Galleria Continua celebrates the first year of collaboration with Eva Jospin (b. 1975), the acclaimed French sculptor who, for over fifteen years, has been experimenting with various materials to create intricate and immersive artworks. Located on the first floor of the gallery, this exhibition features a selection of both recent works and site-specific pieces. The title of the exhibition perfectly encapsulates Jospin’s artistic approach, as she plays with perception to create illusionary landscapes that invite contemplation.

Eva Jospin captivates the viewer, drawing them into her meticulously crafted installations that evoke a sense of wonder. Her sculptures, comprised of forests, architectural forms, and fantastical landscapes, do not aim to represent specific memories or places from her past. Instead, they exist to be observed and appreciated on their own terms. She stated once in an interview that her objective is to build open spaces where the people can enter and create their own fiction. What is particularly astonishing is that these detailed works are primarily constructed from layers of cardboard, adding a surprising element to the experience.

My ideal spectator, the one that I invent through my work, will tie a physical bond of contemplation, where he will both move out of necessity, and be caught up by the detail which will bring him back to a new concentration. I seek to generate temporality with space (…) It is up to the spectator to make the journey, if he wishes”

– Eva Jospin

In addition to her signature cardboard pieces, the exhibition also showcases Jospin’s work with other mediums, including embroidery and bronze. Central to her oeuvre is the theme of the forest—a motif that for Jospin evokes both childhood memories of fairy tales and, in adulthood, a sense of being lost or disoriented. By choosing to leave the cardboard raw, Jospin bridges the natural and industrial worlds, creating a dynamic tension between the organic and the manufactured.

As visitors explore the gallery, they are entranced by the depth of detail and the lifelike quality of Jospin’s creations. It’s almost difficult to believe that such immersive landscapes are made from such humble materials. True to the exhibition’s title, Eva Jospin challenges our perception, making us question what we see and inviting us to look deeper.
